Summary of Chairperson’s Meeting The Chair attended the meeting of Committee Chairpersons. The procedure for committee volunteers is changed. Instead of going before the Board of Selectmen, applicants will be interviewed by a group consisting of the committee chair, selectman liaison and a search committee member. A recommendation will go to the Board of Selectmen for their approval. There will be an Open House meeting for people interested in Committee membership on June 4. Lois Roth-Johnson will attend. There are two applicants for openings on this committee.
Old Business
- Retaining Wall. Lois sent an email to Jon Petersen, Dan O’Brien and Neil Andres. No repair has been done.
- Eastham Bike Month Event. There is a conflict on May 14 with a walking event that goes along the Rail Trail and ends at NRHS. The question of changing the route of our Waterways Biking Event was posed. There was a motion to change the route from the bike trail to continuing down Locust Road to the crossing light at Route 6, then proceeding along Schoolhouse Road, Nauset Road and Cable Road to Nauset Light Beach. Deputy Chief Roderick said he was OK with either route. Officer Back has been assigned. She will be on a bike and lead the ride. The event will be cancelled if it rains. The motion passed 5-1. Recreation Department personnel will bring consent forms to First Encounter Beach at 8:00 AM. The ride starts at 8:30. Sheri Cocchiola will lead and Carol Dobek will be the sweep at the end. Judy Parmelee will
handle the water and B&J coupons at the end at Nauset Light as well as trash pick-up there. Bikeways members should email cell phone numbers to Lois for communication during the event. Publicity is in progress. Information has been submitted to the Cape Codder and to Eastham reporter Marilyn Miller for the Eastham column on May 13, and to the town website for town events listing. The Recreation Department will do other publicity. Sheri will publicize at the schools. Posters will be circulated. CCNS Nauset Ranger Station will be notified of the route change. Bikeways members who are riding should be at First Encounter at 8 am.
- Bike maintenance demonstration. This is scheduled for May 21 from 1-3 PM at Town Hall. Ideas for publicity were discussed. Sheri, Bob, Mike and Lois will attend. Lois will reconfirm the arrangement with Idle Times Bike Shop.
- Boy Scout Rail Trail clean-up. On May 1 Bob Donahoe and Paul Schofield worked with two scouts and their leader removing debris from the sides of the Trail between Old Orchard Road and Brackett Road.
New Business
- Sheri asked about purchasing a banner for future bike events. She will research cost.
- Members were reminded of the volunteer sign up for the August Pan-Mass Challenge.
The Committee will meet next on 1 June 2011.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:28 AM.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Parmelee, Clerk
